Road Map for Aliso Canyon 2023 Closure

Henry Stern

State Senator Henry Stern proposed to jump start the longed for closure of the Aliso Canyon Gas Storage Facility on Friday, December 10, 2021 when he introduced a roadmap to accelerate the closure by 2023. His roadmap is still being drafted and has four key elements:

  1. Increase in clean energy generation and storage
  2. Reducing the demand for natural gas
  3. Establish a reliability plan for extreme weather events
  4. Increase union jobs with clean energy generation

His proposal is especially significant in light of the recent increase to 60% of storage capacity at Aliso Canyon.

He noted that the effort to shut down the storage facility is beyond the scope of one agency; indeed it will take the coordinated effort of multiple agencies and elected officials.
