As a result of a natural gas odor that residents may have smelled today, here is some information that you may wish to share with your neighborhood council members. Please feel free to contact me via email should you have any further questions regarding this matter.
Today, at approximately 7:30am, So Cal Gas was performing routine maintenance on dehydration equipment and odorant tanks at its Aliso Canyon Storage facility. To perform this work, air was purged out of the dehydration equipment and piping. This is done to prevent any combustible mixture.
This routine work resulted in odor that travelled throughout the northwest San Fernando Valley area. It does not pose a safety issue for the public.
Natural gas is lighter than air and odorless. We add an odorant for detection purposes. The odorant is non-toxic. Because the odorant is heavier than air, it has the ability to linger longer than any actual natural gas which if released, would have escaped quickly away from residents.
Odorant will continue to be released until approximately 12 noon. At this time, the maintenance will have been completed.
SoCalGas continues to monitor the situation, respond to customer calls received by our customer contact center, and address any safety concerns. As always, the safety of our customers, employees and the local community is our number one priority. The SoCalGas Customer Call Center number is (800) 427-2200. For hearing impaired, call TDD/TTY (800) 252-0259. For Spanish, call (800) 342-4545.
All my best, Rochelle
